Clover and Boxer are two halves of the same coin. They represent the working class or more specifically the proletariat in comparison to the bourgeoisie. This refers to the urban working class or factory workers, first mentioned in Karl Marx theory, and elaborated upon in Leon Trotsky's writings and philosophy.

Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin while he carries the namesake of Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon uses manipulation, propaganda and lies to rise to power and keep that power. He brainwashes soldiers into committing any crime asked of them and eliminate anyone who gets in his way.
